The voice on the end of the line surprised me. This is Denny O'Neil...is Tim there?
You bet I was. Mr O'Neil, was calling me. I was having a fanboy moment. All of those great Batman stories, the Question, so many good stories...so much talent. On my phone!
Sure, I'd love to.....(can't tell you the rest of the conversation yet anyway). But I had to say, Thanks for your great stories over all those years.
But, that wasn't my only fan moment. Marshall Rogers...Michael Wm Kaluta...Frank Brunner...Steve Englehart...(yeah, look for a big interview with him)...Bryan Singer...Carmine Infantino...Lew Sayre Schwartz...That was this last two months!
I have fun. I love what I do. But I also appreciate their space. An email from Dick Giordano said it best. "Please excuse my delay, I will complete this later. Pete Morisi just passed away, and he was my friend."
They're human. They have good days. Bad days. And they live, love, collect, and even take 2nd jobs to survive! But, as professionals, they have worked to build a reputatation in the industry that can be heartless.
Back to my point. I am no longer awestruck (usually) by comic celebrities. Or even movie stars so much. Soon, I will be talking to Brad Pitt, Sam Shephard, and maybe Dean Cain. A simple 'thanks for' goes a long way. We all like being appreciated.
