Ever wondered about the history behind one of Marvel comics most extreme fighting machines? Read on for details of the mutant known as the Wolverine.
Wolverine is one of Marvel Comics most popular characters, appealing in different ways to both outcast school geeks and popular jocks. Currently the clawed and furry killing machine proves his popularity with a substantial role in at least a half dozen comic book titles, including Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine, Astonishing X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, New Avengers, and X-Force, just to name a few. Who is Wolverine?Thought to be at least 200 years old, the complex mutant nicknamed the Wolverine was actually born James Howlett, and was a teased and bullied, shy, allergy-suffering boy. To everyone’s surprise, and many’s horror, around puberty he developed a heightened sense of sight and smell, super hearing capabilities, retractable bone claws on each hand and a handy healing factor. How he became the leather jacket clad, motorcycle-riding, cigar-smoking, metal-clawed badass that the X-Men have learned to love and cherish more than 200 years later is a mystery as furry as his forearms. Weapon X: Pieces of a Tormented PastWhat Wolverine has pieced together about his past was largely revealed in his Origins series and includes a horrifying stint in a secret government operation known as Weapon X. The mad scientists captured Wolverine and performed torturous experiments, painfully attempting to unravel the secrets of his capabilities. The evil captors surgically grafted the super-strong metal adamantium on his bones, giving him a total of 6 razor-sharp spikes shooting out of his knuckles and an unbreakable skeleton. Luckily Wolverine escaped before his torturous experimenters could implement their plan to use him as an unstoppable assassin, but the damage was done. The Weapon X team implanted false memories which Wolverine’s mutant abilities “healed,” erasing any and all memories of his past, true or false. From Weapon X Killing Machine to Heroic X-ManProfessor Charles Xavier approached the angry and lost mutant years after his Weapon X experience and offered to help him retrieve his memories with telepathic powers if Wolverine agreed to use his combat skills for the X-Man cause. Wolverine complied and has since enjoyed long-standing favoritism with Marvel comic book readers for his unconventional and unpretentious heroism. Perhaps a symbol of a more modern super hero, Wolverine is one of the only super heroes willing to end a threat by outright killing an enemy. The more his tortured history is revealed, the more his fans cheer on each gruesome victory and enjoy his blunt dialogue. Fun Facts About Wolverine
