The Lion Illustrated Bible
Ilustrated Bibles have been around for decades. This year, we have seen the Acts of the Spirt, and now the Lion Graphic Bible. Take note. This is NO Vanilla treatment!
Some topics will always inspire illustrated formats. Nature scenes have been found in art for centuries now. Erotic themes have inspired art from the beginning. And the Bible has been communicated through and with dynamic art. The Lion Graphic Bible is no exception to the rule. There are many illustrated Bibles in existence. Childs versions, photo illustrated versions (and commentaries), and antique books have included exsquisitely produced woodcuts. Comic style books have been popular since the first illustrated bible comic from EC Comics in the early 1940's. Spire Books, and even DC Comics (really!) Have been in comic shops for 60 years. The Lone and Level Sands, The Book of Daniel, David, and Acts of the Spirit have adapted whole books as graphic formats. Jeff Anderson and Mike Maddox have undertaken a large task. From Genesis to Revelation, they have transformed the living word into a profusely illustrated 256 page book. The art by Maddox is excellent and grandeur in scope, but what would you expect from the most inspired book in history? Both men have captured the drama of our fall, and expectant hope that is Jesus. Culturally speaking, we are illiterate. We'd rather see a movie, or watch TV than read a classic book. If the intent of the Lion Bible was to reach those who love comics, then they have succeeded. If it was their intent to produce a book that will appeal to fans of illustration, they have also succeeded. Every page oozes with enthusiasm, the way a good book should. As a writer, I appreciate that. Who is this book aimed at? Kids from age 8 and up. My son used it to study for his Bible test! Look for this online at www.lionhudson.com, or at your local book store. I remain, A fan of the genre, and believer of the words. Tim Lasiuta
