The story begins with Marlin fretting over his son's safety, as he and Dory head to pick up Nemo from a field trip. Mr. Ray has taken his class to the coral beds on the edge of the reef. Nemo's concerned with the coral, which has been turning gray and sickly. At a parent meeting that night, Marlin is pressured into investigating the problem.

This 24-page jaunt works as a standalone story, but sets up the four-issue series, going on an obviously environmental theme. The characters maintain their memorable personalities and foiables. Marie Croall's original plotline is a good start to sustainable title.

Finding Nemo: Reef Rescue is Erica Leigh Currey's sophomore effort, her only previous title being Sea Princess Azuri. She has appeared at the New York Comic Con, in the Kids Love Comics section. While the characters look "on model" to their 3D counterparts, occasionally facial expressions show a definitive manga influence. While I'm not a fan of Japanese anime, I like the fact Erica brings a bit of her personal illustration style to the project: it does work. Considering Pixar head-honcho John Lasseter's involvement with Studio Ghibli, it's even possible he specifically requested an anime style.

BOOM! Studios A New Player

BOOM! Kids publishes various comics based on Disney-owned brands, including The Muppet Show, Muppet Robin Hood, Monsters, Inc., and The Incredibles: Family Matters. The imprint recently launched a Toy Story: The Mysterious Stranger series, and an issue of its Cars: The Rookie was offered during this year's Free Comic Book Day event, held in the United States and Canada. WALL-E and Muppet Peter Pan are on the docket to follow. All of the BOOM! Kids titles will be 4-part, and collected into graphic novel trade paperbacks, sold at major bookstores.

BOOM! Studios first announced the licensed titles at Comic-Con 2008, in a press release citing a scarcity of comics "produced for an upcoming generation of readers".

Parent company BOOM! Studios has published titles based on Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and television series Farscape. An independent comic publisher, they started publishing just four years.

Where To Buy Reef Rescue

So where can you pick up a copy of Reef Rescue? In March, BOOM! Studios and Kable Distribution Services, Inc. announced a newsstand distribution agreement, which has seen their Disney/PIXAR licensed comics appear in drugstores and bookstores across the United States.

I purchased my copy at my friendly neighbourhood comic book shop, which has a much more reliable selection and knowledgable staff.

BOOM! Kids titles are proving popular; the first issues of The Incredibles issue 1 and 2, The Muppet Show issue 1 and 2, Cars issue 1, and Muppet Robin Hood issue 1 have all sold out, each heading into their second printings.
