Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the GodsDark Horse Comics has Returned with a New Indy Story
After a hiatus of twelve years, Dark Horse Comics has jumped on the Indiana Jones bandwagon and published a new four part graphic novel series.
Until the 2008 release of the graphic novel Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to compliment the motion picture of the same name, the last comic book appearance of the man with the whip was in March 1996. The four part story Indiana Jones and the Sargasso Pirates featuring writer Karl Kesel and artist Eduardo Barreto apparently saw a drop in interest in Indy's adventures for though another series was planned, it never materialized. Tomb of the GodsThe release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull brought a renewed interest in the errant archeologist and Dark Horse and LucasFilm got back together for Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods in July 2008. The story takes place between the events in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Raiders of the Lost Ark and begins just north of Norilsk, Siberia in 1931 but quickly jumps ahead to New York in 1936. In typical Indy fashion the story is action packed with fights, whip swinging and perils galore. The object of Indy's quest is a circular object that has been broken into three parts. What it is and what it is for are the questions Indy sets out to answer. The quest takes him first to Tibet. He is flown there by Jock, the same pilot who later got him out of the murderous path of South American natives in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The story is typical of Indiana Jones adventures so far (2 of the 4 comics have been released) with lots of action, nasty Nazi villains, a beauty with questionable alliances and cliff hanging endings. Writer Rob WilliamsThe artwork of Steve Scott and Nathan Massengill is respectable with Indiana looking more like Harrison Ford than he did in Sargasso Pirates. Rob Williams' story is fast paced and with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting as Indy fights against another the Nazi attempt at world domination. In an interview for Indiana Jones: The Official Magazine, Williams explained that he was interested in exploring the evolution of Indy from fortune hunter to archeologist. "Is he doing this for the right reasons - the purity of knowledge - or for his own fortune and glory?" More To ComePart three will be issued in mid-November and part 4 in mid-December 2008.when the final answer and explosive conclusion exposes the horror that exists in the Tomb of the Gods. Those interested in following the continuing adventures of Indiana Jones will have to pick up the four part series as there are no spoilers here...yet. Will there be another series after Tomb of the Gods in finished? Williams says "I've pitched a second series - a story I think Indy fans would love....It depends on how Tomb of the Gods goes."
