Spider-Man; one of the most well-known and popular comic book superheroes of all time. A character that remains timeless and is relevant in any time period with his strong morals and famous phrase; “With great power, comes great responsibility.” The character’s popularity is due to him always being someone for children to look up to, and yet now this may not be so true.
Recently, Marvel Comic’s “Civil War” mini-series finished after several months, and it left off with Marvel’s iconic Spider-Man, switching to his black costume and being part of an underground resistance against the superhero registration act. “Civil War” itself was something of a disappointment and bad developments were made, and now it appears that Marvel is going to continue with this run of bad ideas and remodeling of characters. Change is good, but not when it comes at the cost of character consistency.
As mentioned, Spider-Man is now a member of an underground resistance which is very much against character straight off the bat, how can children look up to a hero on the wrong side of the law? Spider-Man always was a vigilante in the law’s eyes, and so were most other heroes, but having Spidey become someone who will now be sought after by other heroes is a step too far. Spider-Man was always on the right side of the law despite public opinion, and now he is on the wrong side fighting with other rebellious heroes who refuse to accept the registration act. More problems arise from this because he already unmasked (out of character as well) when he was pro-registration, which means that the whole world knows he is and who his family are. It’s completely against type for a character who has been around for forty years.
Now, it is highly unlikely that a hero, who safeguarded his identity for years in order to protect his family, would go underground when it would be much safer for him to simply become registered again. This scenario most certainly does not need him to put on his black costume again, especially because the reason he stopped wearing it was because his wife was attacked by Venom. This was only done to tie-in with the upcoming movie, despite Marvel’s rebukes that it is part of the ongoing plotline.
It appears that Marvel is making mistakes one after the other, characters are becoming so drastically different from what they once were. The Marvel Universe may now be different due to “Civil War,” but there is no need for Spider-Man to become so single-minded or Mr. Fantastic to become morally no better than Dr. Doom.
Hopefully, Marvel will sort itself and their characters out soon, but for now loyal fans will have to rely on feature films to see their favourite characters as they used to be.
